Water has a significant role in the flavor of beer. Historically breweries were developed near local water supplies and the flavor of the beer would often be based upon the local water.
With U.S. craft breweries expanding their operations and developing additional breweries across the country (i.e. Sierra Nevada opening a brewery in North Carolina), matching the flavor profile of a particular beer may include changing the chemistry of the water prior to brewing.
